A collection of coloured matt photographs, all measuring 127 x 89 mm. The envelope is annotated: '1980. 9 photos - Zululand - are of 'Makhalafukwe' the shanty town inside Melmoth 'white' area. These people have got permission to take up jobs in Melmoth! (mostly for Government servants!) Their employers are whites, working in KwaZulu'. The photographs were taken by Wren Robinson.

Busk's hand adds: 'The Cape Town and Simons Town Rd. was only built as far as Wynberg in 1867, but now runs along where these rocks are, and cuts off all the houses from the sea; the road is just in front of the houses'.

Scope and Contents 50 x 64 mm. (Oval image). A carte de visite head and shoulders studio portrait of Abraham de Smidt (1829-1908). A surveyor and amateur artist, de Smidt entered the Cape Civil Service as a clerk in the Commissariat Department in 1846 and was admitted as a government surveyor in 1848. During the years 1849-1850 and 1853-1856 he served on the re-survey commissions in the eastern districts of Cape Colony and was Surveyor-General from 1873-1889. He retired to England and died in Brighton. ...

A glimpse of Barberton, De Kaap Gold Fields, 1900 - 1910

204 x 151 mm. A view from surrounding hillside looking down on the town of Barberton in the eastern Transvaal. Founded in 1884, Barberton was the centre of the De Kaap Goldfields which up to about 1887 produced several million pounds worth of gold. After that date gold mining activity fell off.
